Why You Need To Go To Legends Rest

November 30, 2018

Living in Westbrook, I’ll admit that I was a little apprehensive at first. After all, Portland has restaurants for what seems like miles. But I quickly came to realize that Westbrook is on the up and up.

A big part of this is thanks to Legends Rest. Full disclosure: I’m a member of the mug club (#26) and eat here at least twice a week. So what it is it that keeps me coming back? Keep reading to find out, and get ready to drool!

Okay, let’s start with the basics. Legends Rest Taproom is a fantastic addition to Westbrook’s dining options! It’s owned by the same people who own Samuel’s and Tomaso’s Canteen. Looks like they spread a little of their magic here in Westbrook.

The specials at Legends Rest are ever changing. Who knows what might end up on the regular menu?

At Legends, you’ve got your burgers, your homemade tater tots, and plenty of craft beer to go around for everyone. Legends is also home to some seriously awesome happy hour deals, along with a Monday special that still blows my mind. $2.50 smashed burgers, anyone?

Seriously. Do you know of anywhere else in southern Maine where you can get a burger for $2.50? I definitely don’t, unless you’re looking at McDonald’s or Burger King. Which, let’s get real here, I eat fast food maybe once a year, if that. So besides the fact that they offer burgers for $2.50 on Mondays, the burgers are also good.

That’s probably because a Smashed Burger is a 1/4 lb patty made with ground brisket, chuck, and short rib blend. When it’s not Monday, the Smashed Burger is still only $5 to start. If you’re a toppings fiend, there’s plenty of add-ons to choose from. Add all the toppings you want and you still probably won’t spend $10 total on this burger. This is beyond rare in the Portland area.

Look at that gorgeous smash burger at Legends Rest

As if the burgers weren’t enough, let’s talk about the tater tots. Pretty much everyone on the planet likes potatoes. This is even truer when you talk tater tots. What’s not to love about a mound of potatoes fried into a bite-size ball?

There’s really nothing not to love. Want to change your thoughts on tots forever? Try the Legends Rest tater tots. When you do, you’ll notice these are no ordinary tots. They are handmade, rather than the frozen tots you may be used to from your childhood. Homemade has never tasted so good!

If you can believe it, Legends takes it even further. Not only are their tots homemade, but they have their own section of the menu. Oh yes. Tater tot lovers, rejoice! You can get your hands on:

  • Plain Tots
  • Bacon Cheddar Tots
  • Buffalo Tots
  • Totchos
  • Poutine Tots
  • Chili Cheese Tots
  • Smoked Chicken Tot Pie

The smoked chicken tot pie was recently added to the menu and I couldn’t be happier about it. You think you know chicken pot pie, but you don’t. I don’t know who came up with the chicken tot pie but it’s genius!

You haven't lived til you've had a chicken tot pie from Legends Rest

It’s a chicken pot pie, but instead of your standard, flaky crust, it’s all tots baked on top. Look, living in Maine, you need comfort food, and the chicken tot pie delivers that cozy feeling you get when you’re in your happy place. At least it does for me!

Now, the last (and maybe the most important piece of the puzzle) is the craft beer. At Legends, the rotating draft list is impressive. At any given time, you’ll find Barrelled Souls, Yes Brewing, Mast Landing, Allagash, Rising Tide, Foundation, Maine Beer Co., Goodfire, Dirigo, Fore River, or any other popular craft breweries on tap. For a bar that’s only been open less than a year, that’s pretty incredible. Not to mention, there’s now a waiting list for their Mug Club, since all open spots have already been filled.

I mean, all the things listed above are great, but I also just love having a “place”. You know what I mean. When I don’t feel like cooking, my boyfriend and I go to Legends. When we feel like doing a little day drinking, we’re going to go to Legends and then to Yes and Mast Landing for the afternoon. I live less than 2 miles away, and can easily stop by on my way home from work or just because. Westbrook is home, so I’m glad that my new home away from home is so close and tasty!

Want to check out Legends? They are open 7 days a week from 11:30 am-1:00 am daily. Love happy hour? They have the happiest of happy hours: 2 pm-6 pm on Monday-Saturday and an unheard of ALL DAY happy hour on Sunday. Chances are likely you’ll find me there, enjoying some tots and a beer in mug #26!
